Fisherdottir and the Firebird by Victoria Rance

Victoria Rance creates artworks the viewer can interact with, either physically or in the imagination. She records interactions with her sculptures using photography, film and animation, creating characters or alter egos such as Fisherdottir, a shape shifting wanderer, Thorness, a protector of nature, and Firebird who raises the alarm on global warming. These appear in her images, performances, films and animations, and she often works collaboratively with other artists and musicians. 

Series of works include:

'Sculpture to wear' is a series creating a sheltering skin that protects or alters the sense of self, provoking ambivalent responses in the wearer and viewer; their forms suggest a usefulness or functionality. 

'Otherworld' is a series of small pewter sculptures about the magical, mythological relationships between humans, animals and nature. 

'I Wish' is an ongoing project in which she makes a talismanic object in response to a one to one conversation about a wish.  

Victoria Rance is a multidisciplinary artist based at APT Studios in Deptford, London. She was the 2003 recipient of the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award, and has also received awards from Deptford X, European Cultural Foundation and Arts Council England. Her work is shown nationally and internationally. She was born in Streatley Berkshire in 1959, educated at Newcastle and Kingston Universities, and spent a year in Mexico and Bolivia after graduating. She has three children, and combined with teaching and her art practice, started campaigning actively on environmental issues in 2014, with Friends of the Earth, Greenwich Green Party (for which she has stood as a local and parliamentary candidate) XR and Stop the Silvertown Tunnel Coalition, which she founded in 2019 and for which she is a spokesperson.
